What is included in the rate?
Rates include all meals, teas and coffees, drinks, selected snacks, two game drives as well as refreshments on the game drives and specified safari activities.
What does a typical day at a lodge entail?
Guests can enjoy two game drives per day, where they will encounter some fascinating wildlife and excellent scenic views. Guests can also enjoy guided bush walks, bush picnics and various other safari activities. The lodge itself has a relaxing atmosphere and guests are welcome to enjoy a day of leisure around the pool.
What is the dress code and what should be packed?
Guests are advised to dress in comfortable, loose fitting and relatively cool clothing. Sandals, sneakers and hiking shoes are suitable for relaxing as well as safari activities. Items to pack include the necessary clothing as well as comfortable shoes, a hat or cap, sunscreen and, of course, a camera. Avoid bright coloured clothing and stick to light pastels or khaki.
Are tipping/gratuities expected?
Gratuities are expected and are not included in the rates.
How long should you stay?
Madikwe offers three to seven day safari adventures for guests. A recommended safari stay is usually three days. For individuals travelling from a different time zone, add an extra day to your holiday in case you need a day to recover from jet lag.
Other than safaris, what activities are there?
Madikwe offers plenty of enthralling activities, including bush walks and bush picnics.
Is the reserve a malaria area?
No, the area is malaria-free.
What is the climate?
The climate at Madikwe does not drastically change throughout summer and winter, and the temperature is moderately warm throughout the year. Winters sees less lush, thick vegetation, making it the perfect time for wildlife viewing. It also brings more animals to the numerous waterholes around the reserve. Summer is perfect to see newborn animals, but tracking them will be harder.
How big is the reserve?
The Madikwe Private Game Reserve is approximately 750km2.
What wildlife can you see?
Madikwe is a big 5 game reserve – the lion, elephant, rhino (black and white), buffalo and leopard are spotted in the surrounds. Other animals in the reserve include cheetah, hippo, hyena and wild dog, zebra and a plethora of stunning bird life.
Is there a range of accommodation?
Yes, Madikwe has a selection of safari accommodation available to guests.
How do you get to the reserve?
Madikwe is pretty easy to find. It is situated near the Botswana border, about 90km away from the town of Zeerust.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit would be in winter when more animals can be easily spotted. Winter months are from May-August, which also coincide with the North American and European summer holidays.
Are the lodges’ child-friendly?
Madikwe does offer family-friendly lodging. Most of the safari lodges have a family suite and exclusively child-friendly lodges include Motswiri Private Safari Lodge, The Bush House, Tuningi Safari Lodge.
Do the lodges cater for weddings, honeymoons and conferences?

Can you drive yourself around the reserve?
The lodges can easily be accessed by car but game drives are limited to the reserve’s safari vehicles.
Should you include a stay at Kruger National Park?
Kruger National Park approximately a 7-hour drive from Madikwe. Unless you’re including Kruger in your itinerary, it is not necessary to include a stay at Kruger as madikwe offers the same level of Big 5 safari thrills and luxury accommodation.
Is there mobile coverage in the reserve?
There is intermittent mobile coverage throughout the reserve.
Which lodge within the reserve is the best for wildlife viewing?
Tau Game Lodge, Motswiri Private Safari Lodge and Jamala Madikwe are all great for game viewing as they each overlook a watering hole. Both of Jaci’s Lodges also offer great game viewing opportunities.
Does the reserve offer photographic safaris?
Yes. Photographic safaris are offered at Jaci’s Lodges. Guests at the lodges also have access to the Terrapin photographic hide located in the middle of a watering hole.
