The South Luangwa National Park is one of the best and most renowned wildlife conservation parks in the world

The park features over 60 different animals and over 400 different bird species, making bird watching fantastic. This park is where the now famous walking safari occurred, and is still being practiced today, providing you with a once in a lifetime opportunity to be extremely close to nature – the well known Norman Carr safaris specialise in the walking safaris throughout the entire park.

The South Luangwa National Park lies on the eastern side of Zambia and is one of the most popular places to visit in the country. It’s a large and beautiful reserve that was founded in 1938 and that has been an official national park since 1972. It covers an area of just over 9000 square kilometres and its wildlife is supported by the Luangwa River and its tributaries. The gorgeous Luangwa River also creates the perfect environment for hippos, crocodiles and a large number of bird species. It is certainly one of the best locations you can choose for a safari in Zambia.

Luxury Tented Camp

Old Mondoro ★★★

About an hour east downstream by boat from sister camp Chiawa, Old Mondoro is located in the wonderfully open area of Faidherbia Forest. The camp is a far simpler affair than Chiawa yet the guiding levels, activity choice, service and excellent home-cooking remain on par.

The comfortable rooms are strung out along a hippo-friendly channel off the Zambezi, enjoying great views with their half-height walls and timber decks. Activities at Old Mondoro focus on game drives, walks, canoeing and boating, though the elephant and hippo activity around camp are enough to encourage a lodge-based safari!

sophisticated safari experience

Chiawa ★★★★

The Cumings Family own and run one of Africa’s finest safari operations with their two sensational camps: Chiawa Camp, and Old Mondoro in Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park; and are now also running Puku Ridge in the South Luangwa National Park all under the Chiawa Safaris brand.

Each of these safari camps offer an authentic experiential safari, where the focus is on the bush, the wildlife, and you. A multi-award winning safari operation offering a unique haven of warmth and hospitality, dedicated to making your safari dreams come true.
