As one of the official Seven Natural Wonders of the World, Victoria Falls is one of our favourites and a must-see.
It is found in southern Africa, at the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, and falls from the Zambezi River, the fourth-longest river in the whole of Africa. Although Dr David Livingston named the Falls after the queen at the time, the locals call it Mosi-oa-Tunya. This means ‘The Smoke that Thunders’, which is very apt since this is the largest waterfall in the world.
Since the falls are on the border of two countries, one can approach them from either side. In Zambia, the town of Livingstone provides a route with more trails; and in Zimbabwe, the town called Victoria Falls allows a greater view of the waterfall. It is best not to visit during the annual flood season, as you won’t see the beauty of the Falls, hence a trip between June and October is ideal. When the water levels are at its lowest near the end of this period, one might even be able to walk across the river on the rocks, which makes for some exciting and unique photos.
Victoria Falls is protected by both the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park in Zambia and the Victoria Falls National Park in Zimbabwe, while the Zambezi National Park is just a stone’s-throw-away, too. The wildlife found here range from some members of the Big 5 to herds of antelope, as well as crocodiles and birds.
At the waterfall itself, there are a number of activities for tourists. You can be in the water below the Falls in canoes or kayaks, fishing or swimming; or you can fly over the Falls in a helicopter. There are also walking safaris and horseback rides.
However you choose to experience this great wonder, you will be glad that you got to see it with your own eyes.
