Lesotho and Wildcoast Let us transport you into the magical Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. An Independent Country completely surrounded by South Africa. It's 1.8 million inhabitants have enjoyed independence from the United Kingdom since 1966. Lesotho Ariel
Lesotho tour starts in the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains   Lesotho the Mountain Kingdom

Lesotho and Wildcoast

Lesotho and Wildcoast
Lesotho an independant country in the middle of South Africa   Lesotho in the midst of South Africa's nine provinces

Lesotho is known as the Kingdom in the sky for obvious reasons, it's lowest point is 1000 metres above sea level with Thabana - Ntlenyana the highest mountain, 3841 metres towering above the Sani Pass which is the link between South Africa and Lesotho.

Blankets are the normal dress in Lesotho complete with wellington boots and often the mokorotlo, the traditional Sotho hat. Many of the outlying villages are accessible only on horseback, even our 4x4 cannot get to them, you will see a "car park" full of horses on market day.

Day 1.

Leave Port Elizabeth early morning, we will travel through Port Alfred and East London through the former Ciskei to arrive at our overnight accommodation in Elliot nestling at 1450m in the foothills of the Drakensburg Mountains.

Lesotho and Wildcoast
The road from Roma to Semonkong one of the most spectacular in Lesotho
Lesotho in rural areas, little has changed for 1,000 years

Day 2 - 3.

After breakfast, take Barkly pass and then our first un tarred road through the Drakensburg to enter Lesotho through Tellebrug. We arrive mid afternoon at Malealea Lodge established by a British adventurer in 1905. A choir with home-made instruments will provide the pre dinner entertainment. A trek is included, or you can wander through the hills and villages. Listen to a local band in the Thaba Putsoa mountain region. The lodge is renowned for its Pony trekking and a full day's trek is included.

Day 4 - 5.

Our Lesotho Tour travels one of the most spectacular routes in the country on our way to Semonkong, taking us to over 3000 metres. Semkong was inhabited only by San until the 1800's. After the gun war it became a refuge for Sotho escaping from the lowlands, the town retains its wild west feel, with the locals dressed in blankets and wellington boots, hitching their horses to posts outside the Frasers general store.

The lodge close to the river is comfortable and friendly. It is also the start of the path to the Maletsunyane falls which with a sheer drop of 196 metres is the highest waterfall in South Africa, whilst completing the 5km walk, look out for the flags displayed in the villages, white for sorghum beer, yellow for maize beer, red for meat and green for vegetables. The path is also used by the mountain farmers to herd their horses and cattle wearing cow bells to the river for water. A noisy and interesting scene repeated twice per day.

Day 6.

We head off for Katse Dam created by the Highland water project, its immense 185 metre high wall is the highest in Africa, it drives a massive hydro water scheme that provides water and electricity for Lesotho and South Africa.

We spend the night at Katse Dam Lodge with spectacular views of the lake.

Katse Dam, Lesotho one of Africa's finest engineering projects.

Day 7.

We travel through even more spectacular mountain scenery passing through the 3030 metre Menoaneng pass visiting Mokhotolong, once thought of as the loneliest place in the British Empire. We overnight at the Sani top chalet, the highest lodge in Africa.

We will use our 4x4 we can arrange horse safaris if you prefer

We descend over 1000 metres in a little over an hour down the 37 hair pins of the Sani Pass, only accessible by sure footed Basotho horsemen until the first vehicle managed the pass in 1948.

Lesotho and Wildcoast

Lesotho Hat, Wellington Boots and blanket which believe it or not has to be made in England or it is not up to the job.

Day 8 - 10.

Sani pass 37 hair pin bends link South Africa with Lesotho.
Lesotho and Wildcoast

We then head through Kwazulu Natal and the Transkei for the Wild Coast, Port St John and the Umngazi River Bungalows, situated on the beautiful Umngazi estuary, there are boats to use, excellent fishing, river trips, skiing, mangrove swamps, a salt water swimming pool, warm sea for all year round swimming and an excellent restaurant. We spend the next day relaxing and visiting nearby Port St John, a stunning location at the mouth of the Mzimvubu River, a truly fascinating place, a mixture of chaotic Africa and decaying Colonialism, there are two stunning beaches, First Beach and Second Beach. In the river valley grow bananas, cannabis, paw paws, litchis and avocado.
Can someone please identify the car seen in Port St Johns on the Wildcoast. Made in England I think, so lasts a few lifetimes.
