Darlington Dam was completed in 1922 and submerged the village of Darlington, it supplies water to the Sundays River Valley where the famous Outspan oranges are grown. At first site the Lake bizarre as it is deep in the semi desert Karoo, which you can imagine is like the surface of the moon.
Darlington Lake Lodge is a Karoo oasis. It is extremely stylish and comfortable with incredible gardens and a sparkling swimming pool. Darlington Lake has some of the best fresh water fishing in the country and hosts many National competitions. Spend some time aboard a houseboat on the dam, fish, take a morning and evening game drive or just relax at the pool and enjoy the tranquility of this remote area.

After breakfast head off for the Karoo and Camdeboo Safaris a private game reserve located in the Camdeboo valley, overshadowed by the cliffs of the Toorberg Mountains. The comfortable thatched camp is built around the indigenous wild olive trees. Enjoy Karoo lamb and venison around a camp fire under a star filled sky. Expect to be woken early by the snort of an Impala Ram herding the females out of the camp, where they have bedded for the night. Spend the day in the reserve, there are unlimited game drives to view the numerous different species which includes a herd of Wildebeest. There are a variety of walks to make you wish your whole holiday could be spent in this magical place. As you can see wrap up warm when you go on a day drive. Wind chill and high altitude can make game drives quite cold, difficult to believe when you start mid afternoon at 30 degrees. |

Day 5.Head off after breakfast for Graaff ~ Reinet. Graaff ~ Reinet is a remarkable place established in 1786, this is the forth oldest town in South Africa and was for a short time an independent republic. It has a superb architectural heritage that has been recognised and preserved. It is known justifiably as the Gem of the Karoo, housing over 200 National Monuments. |
The Dutch Reform Church is Central in Graaff-Reinet. |
The Dutch reform Church pictured holds a dominant position in Graaff ~ Reinet . We believed it was a replica of St Martin-in-the-Fields in Trafalgar Square.
We asked if any one new if it was a good copy and offered a free dinner if some one could send a photo of the real thing. Lauren Zork from North Yorkshire sent us the photo but as she said it doesn't seem like a very good copy.!! We are now told it was a replica of Salisbury Cathedral, which is even less convincing. It is obvious it was built before the introduction of digital cameras and the internet. Our advice is to make you own mind up by coming and taking a look for yourself !!! |

There is an excellent collection of fossil skulls of dinosaurs that roamed the area 230 million years ago. We will stay overnight at the Drosty Hotel the former home of the Landdrost (The Cape Governor). Enjoy the excellent seven course menu in the Grand Dinning Room and the accommodation which is in Stretch's Court a cobbled lane of 19th Century cottages. Visit the Valley of Desolation. The rocky canyon, echoing bird calls and expansive skies of the valley should not be missed. It is an ideal place to enjoy sundowners. |

We visit a farm with San art, dinosaur fossils and a place in Boer war history. Traveling on to the Mountain Zebra National Park, one of the top game parks in the country, situated on the slopes of the 2000 metre Bankberg range, it is devoted to the Mountain Zebra. We overnight in the National Park, small bungalows with outstanding mountain views. |

The Mountain Zebra National Park. Yet another exceptional conservation effort. This small park (by African Standards) of 65 sq km's was established in 1937 to protect the 5 remaining mountain zebras of the huge herds that used to populate the area. Of the 5, 4 were male !!! Cabinet ministers at the time could not see a problem and dismissed the problem as "donkey's in football jerseys". Amazingly conservationists managed to establish a breeding herd and there are now 350. |
