Swakopmund is found on Namibia’s coastline just to the north of Walvis Bay. Although it is often referred to as a beach resort, don’t expect the waters of the Atlantic Ocean to be warm! The cold Benguela current is present and therefore some bravery is required to go swimming. However, there are plenty of other things to do in Swakopmund and the beaches are lovely for playing and picnicking. The name Swakopmund is German for ‘Mouth of the Swakop’ and this city is situated in the Namib Desert. Since the city is surrounded by plenty of sand many like to take advantage of the fun activities that go along with it. The sandy area surrounding it is called the West Coast Recreational Area and here you can take part in a number of activities ranging from sandboarding and quad biking to hot air ballooning and skydiving.
