African Lions ( Panthera leo) are in the order Carnivora, and the family Felidae. Lions and other big cats such as leopards, jaguars, etc, are in the genus Panthera. African lions are sometimes nomadic and range in the area of around 1,600 square miles. The average male lions is around 1.7 to 2.5m in length.They stand approximately 1.2m at the shoulder. Lions live in prides of around 15 to 20 individuals. Kwantu has a pride of lions that include males and females. The lions are approximately 3 years old and are indeed a spectacular sight to behold. Guests to Kwantu can expect an exhilarating up-close and personal encounter with one of Africa's most majestic big cats. If you are very lucky you may get chance to see the new born cubs. |

Cheetahs (Acynonix jubatus) are among the worlds fastest land animals, capable of attaining speeds of up to 100km an hour, and taking strides of up to 7m long. The cheetah has a long tail which is used for balance while running. Cheetahs roam over vast territories, and the males do not defend their areas. They tend to avoid other predators. Cheetahs live in open country from Savannah to desert. The average cheetah has a shoulder height of around 85cm, and males usually weigh about 54kg, females at about 43kg. The cheetah is reminiscent of a dog, in that its claws are not fully retractable. Kwantu's cheetahs are of both sexes. |

Kwantu always has many new additions to the family, and the wild dogs certainly are a captivating sight. Visitors to the game reserve are always fascinated and filled with interest over these spectacular animals. For a carnivore the size of an alsatian, the wild dog (Lycaon pictus) or Cape hunting dog, has an intimidating reputation, largely because of its ferocious killing style. The wild dog lives and travels in nomadic packs, and tends to hunt early in the morning, or in the early evenings, when it can see best. Wild dogs can attain speeds of up to 66 km/h while attacking prey. They usually number approximately 10 to 15 dogs per hunting pack, and have been known to chase hyenas as well as leopards, away from a kill. The wild dog is regarded as the second most endangered animal in Africa, with the Ethiopian Wolf being the first. |

If any of the great cats of the world had to be classified according to being shy, then the Serval would surely be above the rest. Servals are nocturnal animals, and therefore are extremely hard to notice. Little is known about their habits, yet their feeding habits and lifestyle well enough to state that this is one of the most wonderful species found on vast territories of East Africa. Servals are much larger than the domestic cat, with its long legs, long neck and small head. They are easily distinguished from other great cats, by their large, erect ears.They are yellowish-tan in colour, with black spots, bands and stripes. Servals prefer areas of bush, tall grass and dry reed beds near streams. They communicate be a variety of high-pitched cries and other calls. When angry, they will snarl, growl and spit, and when content, will purr. Kwantu received the servals approximately eleven weeks ago. They are of varied sex, and originally from the Hoedspruit area. The servals at Kwantu are very much like their family, in that they are extremely shy. Visitors to the Predator Education Centre, are enjoying becoming keen spotters, in catching a glimpse of this most elusive and beautiful member of the cat family |

Birds Kwantu has always had abundant bird-life and with the Game Reserve situated on the majestic Sidbury Plains, birds of all species have found their home at The Place of Gathering. There are over 250 different bird species at Kwantu, making the Reserve a most-sought-after haven for bird lovers and bird-spotters of all ages. Bird species include the jackal buzzard, the Knysna loerie, dabchicks, Denhams, pippit (grass birds), red-knobbed coots, Egyptian Goose's and the famed ostrich. |
