For a carnivore the size of an alsatian, the wild dog (Lycaon pictus) or Cape hunting dog, has an intimidating reputation, largely because of its ferocious killing style. The wild dog lives and travels in nomadic packs, and tends to hunt early in the morning, or in the early evenings, when it can see best. Wild dogs can attain speeds of up to 66 km/h while attacking prey. They usually number approximately 10 to 15 dogs per hunting pack, and have been known to chase hyenas as well as leopards, away from a kill.

The wild dog is regarded as the second most endangered animal in Africa, with the Ethiopian Wolf being the first.

If any of the great cats of the world had to be classified according to being shy, then the Serval would surely be above the rest. Servals are nocturnal animals, and therefore are extremely hard to notice.

Little is known about their habits, yet their feeding habits and lifestyle well enough to state that this is one of the most wonderful species found on vast territories of East Africa.

Servals are much larger than the domestic cat, with its long legs, long neck and small head. They are easily distinguished from other great cats, by their large, erect ears. They are yellowish-tan in colour, with black spots, bands and stripes. Servals prefer areas of bush, tall grass and dry reed beds near streams.

They communicate be a variety of high-pitched cries and other calls. When angry, they will snarl, growl and spit, and when content, will purr.

Kwantu received the servals approximately eleven weeks ago. They are of varied sex, and originally from the Hoedspruit area.
