“Great Wildlife, Great Food, Great People” Date of review: Mar 28, 2011
My boyfriend and I stayed at Bukela Lodge in Amakhala Reserve for 5 days/4 nights in December 2010-January 2011, and had a fantastic time. We returned to Amakhala because of the great experience we had in 2008 at Hlosi Lodge, which is another lodge at Amakhala that is run by the same folks who run Bukela (Steve and Kerry of Lion Roars).
Bukela has 4 bungalows, fewer than Hlosi. This appealed to us, and we enjoyed the exclusivity of Bukela a lot. Bukela’s bungalows and main building are gorgeous, very tastefully and artfully decorated. And like at Hlosi, the wildlife comes around to investigate! The day we checked in, we just missed a “morning elephant” who was eating just outside our bungalow window. (At Hlosi we were treated to a herd of Cape Buffalo by the swimming pool one morning!) The food at Bukela is excellent, both in terms of quality and variety. They offer “game” dinners – for example, we had a melt-in-your-mouth kudu steak one night – and also other, more traditional dinners if that suits you better. They have an excellent selection of South African wine. The highlight, of course, is the animals. And to get the most of seeing and learning about them, you need a great ranger. Enter: Stuart. We were fortunate to have Stuart as our guide at Hlosi in 2008, and we requested that he guide us exclusively at Bukela. (This was our third trip to Africa; we have been on numerous safaris, and Stuart really is that good.) He has a keen eye, incredible ear, and a great sense of humor. Just some of our highlights with Stuart at Bukela include seeing five sub-adult cheetahs horsing around with their mother; watching as an entire herd of elephants walked – literally – three feet in front of our vehicle; stumbling on a white rhino nursing her tiny calf; and spying a caracal at night. We can’t say enough good things about Bukela (and Hlosi!). You will not be disappointed. ![]() “Most amazing stay anywhere EVER” |

The staff at Bukela are some of the nicest I've ever met. They do anything and everything to make your stay comfortable and relaxing. The game driver is incredibly thorough and knowledgable of every animal you see on your game drives making it both fun and a learning experience at the same time. The food setup is intimate and delicious no matter how many of you there are. DEFINITELY going back. |

Everyone should 'do' Bukela! From the moment you arrive, Kerry, Steve and all the staff make you feel very special. The food and accommodation are so impressive that you dont want to leave, but then there are the game drives!! Our guide was David and his knowledge of the animals, birds and fauna was very impressive. He had time to answer all the questions asked of him, and he made us feel very safe and comfortable with the trip. We saw all the animals we wanted to see, Cheetah, Giraffe, Elephants, all the plains game and of course for us the most incredible Rhino!!! Thanks to everyone at Bukela, we would certainly come back tomorrow if we could. |
